Porirua Development

In November 2018 the Government announced its plans to invest $1.5 billion over 25 years to provide warm, dry, healthy homes for Porirua families.

The 1 November announcement of the intention to invest $1.5 billion over 25 years to rejuvenate eastern Porirua and provide warm, dry, healthy homes for Porirua families is exciting news for Porirua and new affordable, market and KiwiBuild houses.

The government will work alongside the community, Porirua City Council and iwi Ngāti Toa Rangitira, to make eastern Porirua a better place to live, work and raise a family by:

  • replacing old, cold and damp Housing New Zealand (HNZ) houses with warm dry modern housing better suited to tenants’ needs
  • building new affordable, market and KiwiBuild houses
  • improving neighbourhood design, including upgrading parks and streets, to make it easier to get around eastern Porirua, and do business here
  • providing the community an opportunity to think about their future education needs and
  • creating jobs for locals.

It is very early days in what will be a 25-year project, with most details are still to be worked out. All those who call eastern Porirua home – residents, businesses and community organisations – will have a role to play in helping plan eastern Porirua’s future.

HNZ will continue to manage all of their tenancies in eastern and western Porirua and continue to support its tenants.

The project is run by HLC, a subsidiary company of HNZ.

Nominations are now open for Te Pae whakahou Hapori (I Porirua ki Rawhiti) – Eastern Porirua Regeneration Advisory Board (Te Pae/the Board). Find out more here.
