We have a social media policy which guides our user behaviour.

Porirua City Council Social Media Guidelines

Porirua City Council reserves the right to remove messages, contributions and followers on its social media pages that break the rules or guidelines of the relevant pages and the rules stated below.

Messages, contributions and images on the Council's social media pages must always be appropriate, relevant and polite. 

  • All comments will be monitored by the social media platform itself and Porirua City Council
  • Our social media pages are safe, inclusive spaces and therefore we will remove any comments that impact on that (e.g. homophobia, sexism, transphobia, racism, hate speech)
  • Any comments that are offensive or inappropriate will be removed. (This includes offensive language, slander, threats to safety, personal attacks on staff, and inappropriate content)
  • Please keep your posts relevant to the conversation and to Porirua City Council
  • If you find any inappropriate comments please report them
  • People who persistently cause conflict or offence to others will be removed and blocked from our social media pages
  • A Like, Share or other link posted by Porirua City Council should not be taken as a formal endorsement
  • During the pre-election period any comments that could be perceived as supporting one candidate over another will be removed
  • Abusive comments which are in direct conflict of Facebook Community StandardsTwitter RulesLinkedIn and Instagram posted on non PCC social media channels will be reported to the associated social media platform and if applicable Group and Page administrators

Discover Porirua Social Media Guidelines

  • Messages, contributions and images on the Discover Porirua social media pages must always be appropriate, relevant and polite.
  • All comments will be monitored by the social media platform itself and Porirua City Council. Any comments that are offensive or inappropriate will be removed. (This includes offensive language, slander, threats to safety, inappropriate content and cultural insensitivity).
  • Please keep your posts relevant to the conversation and to Porirua.
  • If you find any inappropriate comments please report them.
  • People who persistently cause conflict or offence to others will be removed and blocked from our social media pages.
  • A Like, Share or other link posted by Porirua City Council should not be taken as a formal endorsement.

  • Competitions. Any competition run through Discover Porirua will have a own set of guidelines and rules, which will be made available to everyone on this webpage.
  • Sharing of Photographs. We love to share beautiful photographs on social media. From time to time you may get a direct message from the Discover Porirua team asking if we can use your photograph, replying yes to this messaging or using #YesDiscoverPorirua will be endorsement for us to reshare your photograph, of course we will always credit you in the post!

Contacting us on Social Media

Porirua City Council is always happy to hear from you. We welcome suggestions, feedback and ideas from all our community members, and endeavour to join the conversation where possible. Please be aware sometimes we are not able to reply individually to all the messages we receive via social media.

Social media is a public forum, and we ask you to look after yourself. Please consider this when posting, especially regarding personal information.  If you are reporting a problem, please don’t give your full details until we are talking one to one.

We generally update and monitor our social media accounts during office hours, Monday to Friday. If you are requesting a service on social media, we suggest you to contact us by phone or email. This will help us to respond to your request more effectively. If you require an immediate response, please call us on 04 237 5089.

Pre-election period

Porirua City Council must be politically neutral in its communications. Therefore, please do not use any of our social media pages to promote party political messages or other content. We will remove any comments that, in its view, may compromise its obligation to maintain political neutrality
