From its ornately worked porches and flowing lawns, the view of Porirua’s sparkling twin harbours is breathtaking.
Nestled among the rose gardens and flowering shrubs, protected from the winds by a magnificent stand of historic pines, Gear Homestead is an unforgettable picture. Built in 1882 by the pioneer business magnate, James Gear, the Homestead offers an unrivalled blend of elegance, history, privacy and practicality.
Gear Homestead now under the stewardship of experienced Wellington caterer Lorna Shelton of Red Herring Catering. There's a café at the Homestead and the venue is still available for weddings, meetings and special occasions.
With views of Porirua Harbour, the homestead is a great place to meet friends for a coffee or lunch. There is plenty of parking and the grounds and gardens are ideal for a walk, or there is the rope course in the adjoining forest at Adrenalin Forest for the more adventurous before or afterwards.
Gear Homestead is centrally situated in Porirua City, on the hill overlooking the harbour.
It is easily accessible from State Highway 1 at the Whitford Brown intersection in Okowai Road, and is well signposted.
Gear Homestead Cafe is usually open Wednesday to Friday from 9.30 am - 4.30 pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 8.30 am - 4 pm. See closure notice above.
