Who gets your vote?

This year is your chance to decide who you want to make the big decisions for our city by voting in the 2019 Local Elections.

Nominations for the positions of mayor and councillors have closed and the candidates are confirmed. It’s now time to find out who is standing for election, and start thinking about the issues that matter to you most, says Porirua City Council Manager Democratic Services, Lynlee Baily.

The elections are your opportunity to vote for councillors in the area you live in, as well as choosing who you’d like to be Porirua’s Mayor,” Ms Baily says. The names of all the candidates can be found on the elections page of Porirua City’s website.

“More information will be added as we get it, but this is a good chance to find out who the candidates are in your area, and start thinking about what’s important to you and to the city.

There will be lots of opportunities to hear from candidates at meetings around the city, run by residents associations and community groups.

“We’ll promote candidate meetings on our website as we hear about them – and will update this as more events are planned, so make sure you check in and find a meeting that suits you,” Ms Baily says.

“These meetings are great opportunities to hear from the candidates and find out what they’re standing for.”

If you haven’t enrolled to vote yet, it’s not too late. You can enrol right up to Friday 11 October (the day before the election), but if you enrol after 16 August you’ll need to do a special vote rather than a postal vote.

“For those enrolled already, voting papers will be sent out from 20 September. So take this time to start finding out more about who is standing and who you want to be your voice in the decisions made for our city.”
