Stockpiling material on site

Make sure there are no unprotected stockpiles of dirt and material on your construction site to help prevent silt and sediment run-off.

Stockpiling materials on site

Protection of stockpiles is important to prevent offsite discharge of sediment. Stockpiles should be located close to the centre of site and away from any streams, drains or other locations where the material could migrate off site. Stockpiles must not be placed on asphalt or anywhere else where runoff goes directly to Porirua City’s stormwater network.

If material is being temporarily stockpiled to be taken off site, arranging the removal quickly and before rain prevents erosion from occurring and is preferable to long-term stockpiling.

Material can enter our drains and streams if stockpiling locations are not appropriate.

If the material being stockpiled is not going to be used or removed immediately, silt fencing can be installed around the stockpile. Alternatively, the stockpile can be protected using geofabric or plastic (that is pinned down) or covered in hay.

If a stockpile is going to be in place long term (three months or more), the most appropriate action may be to seed or hydroseed the stockpile and allow grass to stabilise the stockpile. This is especially relevant for topsoil stockpiles that are going to be reused as part of the final landscaping of the site.
