23 October 2025: extreme weather updates
Titahi Bay Beach on the morning of 23 October 2025.
Here is what you need to know from Council about the extreme weather hitting the region:
If you see anything that needs reporting to Council, please either use the Antenno app or call our contact centre on 04 237 5089.
4pm:
SH58 around Whitby has REOPENED. Please travel with care.
2pm:
Grays Rd has REOPENED.
1.15pm:
Spicer Landfill closed
- Spicer Landfill will be closed from 1.15 pm today as high winds are making operations too dangerous. Tall trucks with their rear trays up, difficulty transporting waste from the refuse pit up the hill for burial, and the severe risks associated with working in the open in such extreme wind makes the operations too dangerous today.
The landfill will reopen tomorrow morning (Friday).
12.25pm:
- Grays Rd is now CLOSED due to surface water
11.45am:
- State Highway 58 is now CLOSED in Whitby, between Joseph Banks Drive and Postgate Drive due to flooding. Strong winds are driving waves and debris across the highway.
10am:
- There are reports of trees down across the city and debris on roads. Our crews are responding as quickly as possible. If you live an affected community, please stay home and avoid going out for a walk.
9.30am:
- all outdoor courts and sports fields are closed today
- the Spicer Link track and tracks on Rangituhi are closed until further notice
- our contact centre is experiencing a high number of calls, so please be patient if you are calling to report something.
8.20am:
- the Porirua Nursery is closed today for all pick ups and sales
- scheduled recycling pickups are going ahead, but we recommend waiting until the next collection if possible. If your bin is out, please make sure the lid clip is firmly closed
- our pools and libraries are open as usual at this point.
