Librarian Gina Miller may love books, but it’s the people that make her job special.
Gina has been a friendly face in the Cannons Creek Library for eight-and-a-half years. She’s soon to head back to her hometown Dunedin to be closer to family – leaving big shoes to fill in the library.
For Gina there have been many highlights of the job, but one stands out above all others.
“I’ve loved getting to know the people of Cannons Creek. There are just so many amazing people,” she says.
Gina has liaised with local schools and kindy groups, and has many regular young customers who pop into the library to read or just say kia ora.
On proud display at the library is the Wall of Fame, featuring more than 180 tamariki who have taken part in reading programmes and had their efforts rewarded with their photo on the Wall of Fame – their smiling faces a reminder of what makes Cannons Creek Library so special.
The rich and varied cultures of Porirua have been another highlight for Gina.
“I’ve loved the opportunities to experience other cultures, especially Māori and Pacific cultures, and to see people’s pride in their cultures.
“Through English Language Partners I’ve met people from Myanmar, Syria, Thailand and Laos and other countries, which has been a great experience.”
Gina is also blown away by the kindness and generosity of the community. One example is the “free box” set up in the library, where people drop off clothes or other unwanted items that others can then take as needed.
Gina will miss Cannons Creek and there’s no doubt Cannons Creek will miss her too.
We’re looking for a special person to fill Gina’s role – find out more here.
