A meeting of the full Porirua City Council was held this morning, Thursday 29 May. Here is a wrap of what was covered:
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker highlighted some of her activities in the past two months since the last full Council meeting, including celebrating the 100th birthday of the Plimmerton Boating Club; the Grand Traverse; Rotuman Language Week flag raising; blessing of the new pou at the entrance to Kenepuru Landing; speaking at the Pacific Symposium; opening of the new E Kai Initiative soup kitchen; and the blessing of two new Kainga Ora homes at Dido Pl in Cannons Creek.
Council Kaumātua Dr Taku Parai also gave a brief report, noting he had attended many of the same activities as the Mayor. He noted the opening of Mana College’s new technology block, Te Urukahika, as another highlight.
First on the agenda was a report submitted by Mayor Baker seeking approval to include a non-binding referendum question on voting documents for this year’s local elections, asking voters if they think Porirua City Council should work with councils in Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Greater Wellington Regional Council on investigating the potential of amalgamation.
After some discussion and questions, councillors voted to include the referendum. Read more about the decision here.
Next, Council approved Animal Control fees for the 2025/26 year. Most of the fees will increase by 5 per cent and will be effective from 1 July.
Following this, Council approved a request to rename Lower Main Drive in Kenepuru to Kārearea Drive as part of the Kenepuru Landing Development. Lower Main Drive is a private road within the former Porirua Hospital site and is about to become public as part of stage 3 of the housing development.
As the two roads are already connected, giving the entire road one name will make for easier wayfinding.
A pilot Waste Minimisation Grant Scheme was the next item approved in the meeting. Starting in 2025/26, part of the funds received by Porirua City Council from the Waste Levy Subsidy will be used to provide community grants to groups with projects that will encourage reuse, repurposing and recycling capacity in the city.
Establishing this grant is part of enacting Porirua City’s 2023-29 Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. Read more about the scheme here.
The final two items on the agenda saw Council receive the March 2024 Quarterly Growth Report and the Tamariki and Rangatahi Status Report 2024.
There were no speakers in the public forum.
At the workshop following the meeting, Council received an economic update from Brad Olsen at Infometrics.
