We have beautiful street art across Porirua City and you can discover more of it with the inaugural Street Art Explorer activity which kicked off this month.

Running for all of October, 20 murals around the city have been included in a special explorer booklet for young and old to visit and learn more about the street art around Porirua.

There are questions to answer and a corresponding rubbing at each mural. Once you’ve collected three rubbings, you can take your booklet to Te Rauparaha Arena reception and be rewarded with a free Arena Aquatics child swim pass.

You can choose to submit the booklet once you’ve collected three rubbings, or keep going and level up for more passes!

“This is a great activity for the school holidays, now that spring is in full swing and families are looking for outdoor activities to keep everyone entertained,” says General Manager Community & Partnerships, Reuben Friend.

“Exploring the murals is also a fun way for people to discover parts of Porirua they’ve never been to and see the variety of street art around the city.”

More and more murals have popped up in Porirua over the past 20 years since the Council chose a more colourful way to combat the tagging and graffiti that required constant and costly cleaning.

There are now 138 sites around Porirua where murals have been used to brighten villages and reduce tagging. Much of the artwork has been designed and created by local artists and school students.

If you added up the space filled by all the murals in Porirua City they’d take up half a football field – that’s a lot of paint!

To participate, pick up the Street Art Explorer booklet and crayon from the Council front counter in Cobham Court, or any Porirua City Library.

Remember to take your booklet to Te Rauparaha Arena by 31 October if you want to earn your free Arena Aquatics swim pass. For more info: poriruacity.govt.nz/streetart
