From your Mayor - 13 May

I know what you’re thinking. Who would want to be a Councillor right now?

It’s true – local government isn’t easy. Across New Zealand, councils are grappling with decades of underinvestment in infrastructure, skyrocketing costs, and the challenge of balancing today’s needs with tomorrow’s responsibilities. Ratepayers are feeling the pinch, and we work hard to keep increases as fair and affordable as possible.

Add to that a tough online environment, where public figures can find themselves in the crosshairs of keyboard warriors, and you can see why standing for Council might not be everyone’s first idea of a good time.

But here’s the thing – it’s still one of the most rewarding and meaningful ways you can contribute to your community.

Since joining Council, and especially over the past six years as Mayor, I’ve had experiences I never would have imagined – challenging, inspiring, and eye-opening in equal measure. I’ve met so many amazing people from all walks of life. I’ve learned from them. And I’ve seen first-hand the difference a strong, community-minded Council can make.

That’s why, despite the challenges, I’m putting my hand up again in October – and many of my current colleagues are too.

But we need more good people. People who care about their city. People like you, or someone you know – your neighbour, your cousin, your mate from sports club. If they’ve got ideas, integrity and a love for Porirua, encourage them to stand.

Yes, it’s tough. But it’s worth it. And we need you.
