From your Mayor - Meri Kirihimete

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, most of us will be looking forward to a chance to celebrate and relax.

The holiday season can, however, put additional financial strain and expectations on some families, with 2024 being particularly challenging for many people and businesses. While there are green shoots of recovery happening, it looks as though there will be a fairly long tail to this economic downturn, so we must continue to support those who are struggling.

On Christmas day I will be working at Te Rauparaha Arena serving Christmas lunch to those who don’t have families or the ability to celebrate at home. The fact is that this time of year can be difficult for some in our community, especially those who may be alone.

If you know of a neighbour, friend, or family member who might need some extra support or companionship, consider reaching out. Small gestures, like checking in or sharing a meal, can mean so much.

As you prepare for your holiday plans and get ready to go away, make sure your pets are looked after, and be safe on your travels.

Whether you are heading across town or taking a road trip, please drive responsibly, watch your speed, and avoid distractions so you can all arrive at your destinations safely. If, like many Kiwis do at this time of year, you are heading to the beach, river or lake, please take care in, around or on the water and swim between the flags.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m filled with optimism for our city and region. I have no doubt that we’ll continue building a strong, vibrant community that reflects our rich diversity and is one of the best places in Aotearoa to live and raise a family.

I wish you a peaceful, safe and restful holiday season. Meri Kirihimete me ngā mihi o te tau hou!
