Following your team’s score at Porirua Park has become easier.

A $25,000 custom-design electronic scoreboard made its debut for the Wellington Premier 1 college rugby final on August 19.

The bigger and brighter LED model has numbers and letters that are easier to see and is well worth the investment for one of the region’s premier sports grounds, Porirua City’s Parks Manager Olivia Dovey says.

“This is a showpiece ground for the city, with a variety of codes using it, and the old scoreboard wasn’t up to scratch,” she said.

“This is bigger, brighter and has the option for logos and advertising and other images – it’s a selling point for the ground as we look to keep attracting big events, more finals days, and our bread and butter Saturday sport.

“It adds another dimension to Porirua Park and it’s a tool to better engage with our community.”

The scoreboard, made by Proto Scoreboards in Christchurch, is 2.56m x 2.56m and has a screen resolution of 160 x 160 pixels.

It will be controlled by a handheld remote.

The support stand which the scoreboard is set into will be upgraded in the coming months.

Acting Mayor Izzy Ford, a former Black Fern, said the scoreboard will enhance spectator enjoyment at Porirua Park.

“We get so many visitors to our ground and to have an old, rundown scoreboard like that, that is difficult to get parts for, is not a good look.

“This is overdue and a very welcome addition to a ground that the Parks team take a lot of pride from.”
