To mark the second anniversary of the Kaikoura earthquake,
Porirua City Council staff made a trek to high ground at lunchtime on Wednesday to practice a tsunami evacuation.
Staff who were able to take part began with a drop, cover
and hold, before walking to the Porirua Emergency Operations Centre in Raiha
Street. About 50 staff took part in the walk, then enjoyed lunch and a chat on
emergency management.
Scott Martin, Porirua City Council’s Manager of Health, Safety and Emergency Management, said the walk out was a fun exercise to reinforce a serious message.
“Like many parts of Porirua, the city centre is in a tsunami
zone – so if we have a long or strong earthquake we need to head to high ground
as soon as it’s safe to do so,” he said.
