The colloboration between Waka Kotahi, police and councils in the Wellington region to bring drink driving numbers down has kicked off again.

After a successful effort in June, people will be reminded in October and November of the consequences of drinking and driving, through education - billboards, posters and plenty of social media - and police vehicle checks and checkpoints.

Alcohol contributes to a third of deaths and serious crashes in the Wellington region in the past 10 years and Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says as a community we should not tolerate getting behind the wheel after drinking.

"We're happy to join with our partners like police and Waka Kotahi to ensure our roads are safe, especially as we get prepared for warmer weather and the run-up to Christmas," she says.

"We need to shift behaviour and making people realise that a drink-driving conviction can harm families, job prospects and many other parts of your life needs to be highlighted."
