How Porirua City Council rates are calculated

Porirua City

If you are a Porirua ratepayer, you will have recently received your rates invoice for the 2025/26 year. Your rates invoice from Porirua City Council will have the rates for both Porirua City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC).

These council rates increased by different amounts, as outlined below:

Porirua City Council rates increase

The Porirua City Council rates increased by (on average) 6.39%. The Annual Plan for 2025/26 has more details. It can be found here

However, the rates increase is not the same percentage for everyone. The actual calculation depends on property type (eg residential, commercial, rural) and the capital value of that property.

Greater Wellington Regional Council rates increase

Included in the rates invoice are the GWRC rates, which Porirua City Council collects on behalf of GWRC. Their rates increase for residential properties 2025/26 was 11.6%.

  • Their Annual Plan can be found here
  • GWRC also has a Porirua-specific fact sheet here

Comparisons with previous years

If comparing from year to year, it's best done based on the assessment for each Council that was included with the invoice.

How are the actual amounts decided?

Our rating policy sets out the principles for setting the amounts collected, which vary by a number of factors, including type (residential, commercial and rural) and capital valuation. You can read the policy here
