A karakia was conducted this morning by mana whenua Ngāti Toa to officially mark the start of construction of a major infrastructure project in Porirua - a wastewater storage tank.
Wellington Water and Downer will build the tank on land between SH59 and the railway line next to the park and ride carpark at Porirua railway station.
When it rains heavily – which is happening more often – stormwater infiltrates the wastewater network, sending more wastewater to the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant than it can handle. The new storage tank will hold wastewater in heavy rain, releasing it at a rate the treatment plant can manage, and reducing the number of discharges into our waterways.
