LGBTQIA+ mural opportunity in the city

rainbow

The LGBTQIA+ mural will be a feature of Ferry Place in Porirua's Te Manawa

We’re looking for an artist to create an LGBTQIA+ mural in central Porirua, bringing to life the vision of Aotea College’s student rainbow group.

The 22m2 mural will be painted on four ACM sign panels off site, in the artist’s studio, then mounted on a wall in Ferry Place.

The mural will be based on themes identified by Rainbow Aotea, the college group that proposed the mural idea to Council as a way to promote inclusion and celebration of the city’s rainbow community.

The process and details:

  • Artists are invited to submit an A4 sized sketch concept, incorporating one or more of the concepts suggested by Rainbow Aotea. These are:
    - native birds, using LGBTQIA+ flag colours
    - rainbow flag, Picasso style
    - "obviously gay", not too subtle
    - unique to New Zealand

  • A4 sketches must be submitted by 27 August 2024, to [email protected]

  • The submissions will be assessed by a panel, which will include rainbow rangatahi. Two concepts will be selected, and those artists will be asked to develop their sketch into a mural design, and will each be paid $500 (plus GST if GST registered).

  • The two mural designs need to be complete by 24 September. They will then be assessed by the Council’s Arts Panel and a final design will be selected, by 15 October.

  • The successful artist will then be commissioned to paint, seal and deliver the panels to Ferry Place site by 10 December.

  • The panels will be supplied by Council, and delivered to the artist’s studio. All other materials, including Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield, will be provided by the artist. The artist fee will be $9,000 (plus GST if GST registered)
