New signage for Porirua walkways

Finding your way around some of Ascot Park and Whitby’s beautiful walkways is about to get much easier.

In September and October new signs, attached to chunky timber bollards, will be placed along the Whitby, Duck Creek, Whitby Village and Conclusion walkways in the two Porirua suburbs. The new signage will give people “confidence to get lost”, says Parks & City Services Manager Julian Emeny, but take away the risk that often comes with exploring unfamiliar areas or facing an increased journey time.

“Our team wants to ensure our city’s reserves and walkways are much more friendly to navigate, whether you’re walking or cycling,” Julian says.

“At the same time, we want people to be safe in the knowledge that it’s possible to get back on the beaten path, so building consistent and easy-to-understand signage is fundamental to that.”

The new signs are durable and easy to update if needed in the future, representing Council’s desire to be both sustainable and provide an environment where residents, and visitors to Porirua, can do regular exercise.

Walking and cycling are sustainable ways to move about, cause no air pollution, reduce pressure on our roads and create a safer community, with more eyes on our neighbourhoods.

“By making our walkways and other routes easier to use, it promotes the positive idea of building activity into our daily lives, which is great for mental and physical health,” Julian says.

In coming years, there are plans to roll these signs out in other Porirua suburbs.
