Terry Roche has served Porirua’s police service longer than many paid members.

The long-time police volunteer was yesterday awarded with a Mayoral Award by Porirua Mayor Mike Tana, to recognise his 25 years of service.

During his time, Terry, who lives in Tawa, worked at a number of police bases, all in and around Porirua. He started in the main beat base in the CBD, before moving to the community policing base nearby and then finally to Waitangirua Community Policing Station.

Kapiti-Mana Police Area Commander Tracey Thompson said Terry’s willingness to volunteer his time has enabled his police colleagues to spend more time in the community.

Before his recent retirement, Terry would call up victims of crime that had been reported, offering support and prevention advice.

“He did an incredible job over a quarter of a century – the victims of crime he has supported through his work have been from all over the district, and Terry always maintained a high level of professionalism,” Ms Thompson said.

“His regular and unfailing support of Police is something he can be proud of – following up with victims, updating files and ensuring victims have the correct support around them.

“I couldn’t comprehend the number of people he has assisted, but without a doubt there would be thousands that have benefited from his ear and a calm voice of reassurance.”

In giving Terry his Mayoral Award, Mayor Mike Tana said an empathetic ear should never be underestimated.

“Terry listened and it takes a special person to take on the role he has, as it can be time-consuming.

“He is a true gentleman with a soft manner and a commitment to helping victims of crime.

“I understand he does not expect any sort of recognition for what he does, but he absolutely deserves it!”

Terry also assists the Tawa Community Patrol with their activities, giving them a good idea about where they should focus their energy, including into Porirua if police require it.
