Porirua funds emergency services

news - emergency services funding

Emergency Services and Victim Support are on track to receive grants to the value of more than $48,000 from Porirua City Council.

The Grants, Awards and Events Sub-Committee today recommended that the Council grant $30,000 to Wellington Free Ambulance, $8056 to Mana Volunteer Coastguard, $7000 to Wellington Life Flight and $3000 to Victim Support Kapiti Porirua.

The Emergency Services Fund is a non-contestable fund that has been operating since 2010 to support organisations that provide essential services to people in Porirua. It has a pool of $45,056 for 2018/19, with the Victim Support request was added this year.

Deputy Chairperson of the Sub-Committee, Faafoi Seiuli, says including Victim Support was not a hard decision to make, considering statistics that show 464 people were helped in Porirua and Kapiti by the organisation in 2017.

“These emergency services save lives. They do amazing work for our community during times of extreme stress and worry. The city’s contribution will help these men and women in the important work they do,” he says

The Sub-Committee’s decision will need to be ratified by a meeting of the full Council.

A review of the Emergency Services Fund will be carried out in the next 12 months, as this has not been done since 2012.
