Spring flowers will be planted in three of Porirua’s roundabouts and elsewhere around the city, with an orange theme prevalent.
Honouring a promise to Porirua Zonta, orange flowers will be planted to support the group’s commitment to promote the human rights of women and end violence against women and girls.
Flowers that you may see going in around the city include impatiens, gazania, marigolds and begonias.
Porirua City Council is three years into a programme of planting hearty species after the presence of fungal disease sclerotinia in the city. The disease, which can stunt growth and is sometimes known as white mould, can survive in soil for up to 20 years and careful management is required to overcome it.
It is for this reason that the Council has had to limit the palette of plant choices.
