Road safety initiative collects five truckloads of car and booster seats

A free drop off for expired or damaged car or booster seats has led to 166 being collected last month.

The scheme, which ran all November, allowed members of the public to drop off the seats to Trash Palace.

Porirua City Council road safety coordinator Paulette Pavelich says car seats are one of the most frequently used pieces of equipment parents or caregivers own, but they have a five-to-10 year expiry date. Constant use strain the straps, which weakens them over time, while the base and back of the seats can develop micro-cracks to undermine their strength.

Paulette says the Trash Palace initiative was a huge success and hopes to do it again in the future.

“It’s great to have this level of community engagement, and to know that these unsafe car seats are now out of circulation, keeping our tamariki in Porirua safer travelling in vehicles over the next year.”
