A collaborative project between Capital Journeys, state highway maintenance provider for Waka Kotahi, and CPB HEB, the Transmission Gully Motorway builder, will improve the deteriorating condition of State Highway 59 south of Mungavin overbridge. These works will include repairing, levelling and resurfacing the road. Crews will also control vegetation and upgrade barriers, drainage and retaining walls.
Nightworks are necessary on up to 28 nights along this 2-kilometre stretch of road because this is still a busy highway, even though Transmission Gully Motorway now carries most of the traffic north of Porirua.
Some work will be done during the daytime but, if the big asphalt machinery is used during the day, it would cause unmanageable traffic delays.
Therefore, the road will be closed during nightworks and a traffic detour will be in place through local roads – a northbound closure and detour on approximately 16 nights, followed by a southbound closure and detour on approximately 12 nights.
Asphalt resurfacing work will first start on the northbound side of the highway and will later move across to the southbound side. Chipseal will be laid during the daytime as it needs the warmer temperatures.
Northbound – 15 May to 6 June
Nightworks – Sundays to Thursdays 9pm-6am
Dayworks – Mondays to Fridays 6am-9pm
Southbound – 7 June to 22 June
Nightworks – Sundays to Thursdays 9pm-6am
Dayworks – Mondays to Fridays 6am-9pm
