It’s shaping up to be a scorcher this year and A-Long Hot Summer Story Festival has a sizzler of a programme for book lovers and crafty kids.
The festival will launch in hilarious style on 20 December at 5.30pm at the City Centre Library with Chris Lam Sam’s riotous Musical Mayhem show.
“There’ll be fun for the whole family at the launch party with songs, games, giveaways, storytelling and loads of laughs,” says Children’s Librarian Bee Trudgeon.
The festival will be held at the City Centre, Cannons Creek, Whitby and Pukerua Bay libraries from 20 December to 17 January, with more than 20 events on offer.
Cool craft activities, interactive improv theatre, pantomime, master storyteller sessions, magic, music and karaoke are just some of the programme’s highlights.
“The Soft Toy Sleepover is back by popular demand, after being one of the highlights of last year’s festival.
Photographic evidence taken for the toys’ mummies and daddies revealed them getting up to all manner of hijinks! There were certainly some tired little teddy bears/mermaids/rabbits the next day,” says Bee.
“Another highlight will be when we sing out the old year and sing in the coming one on the morning of New Year’s Eve. Participants in this giant karaoke jam will get to make their own superstar mics, and then vogue it up for all they’re worth in a massed pop choir. Everyone will be a star that day!”
As well as the events that are running at these libraries over summer, there’ll be a different activity each week for kids popping in to the Whitby Library.
There’s also a ‘find the library boatshed challenge’ at the libraries, with a mystery goodie bag prize for collecting all four stamps.
Last summer’s festival saw more than a thousand library lovers entertained by craft sessions, innovative musicians and talented storytellers during the school holidays – and this year’s programme looks even better.
