Do you know someone who deserves to be honoured for the work they do in the community? Nominate them for a Porirua Civic Award!
Nominations for the awards close this year on 12 April. Running in the city since 1993, they recognise people who have contributed to Porirua with their leadership, inspiration or commitment, often behind the scenes and out of the public eye.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says our city is full of residents giving up their own time for their neighbourhood, suburb or the city as a whole. These awards are a way to put worthy recipients in lights – even if it’s just for one night.
Past recipients have been recognised for things like maintaining a walkway near their home, helping with elderly care, supporting their local church, and volunteering their time and energy with a sports group or club.
“If you know of someone that has been doing a great job these past 12 months, or much longer than that, without asking for anything back, please put their name forward,” Mayor Baker says.
“The nominees we’ve had in previous years are inspiring due to the sacrifice and devotion they display. It makes me proud to see those nominations come in.
“The challenges that we face in the world today remind us constantly of the importance of community and fellowship, so highlighting our local heroes that make a difference is something we need to keep doing.
“I enjoy attending this award night because it’s a chance for me to personally thank those that make the city what it is,” she says.
Categories that people can be nominated in are community service, cultural & art affairs, educational service, the environment, health and wellbeing, and youth service.
Recipients will be confirmed in May before the awards night on 18 June.
