The memorial was unveiled in 1922 by Governor-General Lord Jellicoe to commemorate those soldiers that died in World War 1. A new brass plaque was added to the memorial following World War II with the names of four soldiers. Two other plaques, one which was in honour of servicemen since World War 1 and II, were removed from the memorial in 2006 to a more appropriate location.

The memorial is located at the base of the pa site Mataitaua, built in the 1840s by the Ngati Toa leader, Te Rangihaeata.
