HHS002 Te Pa o Kapo. Category 2 Pa Site-Te Pa o Kapo (register #6122, NZAA site R26/112).
Te Pa o Kapo was built by Ngati Ira and occupied until the 1820's. This pa site was used as a refuge place for those people living around the Whitireia area. During the early 1800s the Ngati Ira chief Whanake used this pa for its strategic trading location.
Natural valuesAn important cluster of Hebe elliptica on the broken rocky cliffs is in danger of being out competed by numerous weed species, including karo, pohutukawa and taupata. It is very vulnerable to becoming locally extinct.
The species Melicyus aff. obovatus 'Cook Strait' is a plant only found in two places on the Porirua Coast and is endemic to the Cook Strait area. The population at the northern end of Titahi Bay is being out competed by Montpellier broom and non-local native karo and is in danger of becoming locally extinct.
