It’s been a busy few weeks in Porirua with new businesses opening, trees being planted, 50th celebrations and lots of community drop-ins to hear feedback on our Long-term Plan (LTP).

It’s great seeing new businesses opening in our city with two having moved into NSG House in Whitby. The staff at Zil Barbers are friendly and do a great job based on the happy clients I’ve seen coming out. Next door, Glow Pilates run classes for all levels to build strength, flexibility and balance. Even I gave it a go!

A new cadetship programme has just started in eastern Porirua. It will help local young people gain new qualifications and on-the- job training, planting more than 100,000 native plants through Bothamley and Cannons Creek parks over the next three years.

They are using plants from the Council Nursery in Sievers Grove and already one of the cadets
has moved into a full-time role with the Council’s Parks team. Fantastic stuff.

Congratulations to the Whitby Scouts who have just celebrated 50 years in the traditional way - melting marshmallows on sticks around the campfire. Scouts help our young people develop leadership, creativity, health and wellbeing and they volunteer in the local community giving back to others. Well done!

Councillors and I have been out talking to you about our LTP and budget for the city for the next
10 years. We had a fabulous time at the Pacific Night Markets in Cannons Creek recently alongside businesses and locals enjoying great food and products.

These monthly markets help bring to life our Pacific Strategy to celebrate, value and empower
Pacific communities. Many of you gave us great feedback on our LTP via video – a new and easier way for you to share your views with us.

If you’d like to make a video submission on your device, you can upload it at poriruacity.govt.nz/haveyoursay-ltp. Consultation closes on 26 April.
