How your unwanted things can help so many people

Trash Palace

For decades Trash Palace has perched atop the hill on the way to Spicer Landfill – a useful spot for people passing through laden with unwanted items to drop things off to potentially have a renewed life.

While it is well-known that donated items are then displayed inside the shop for others to purchase, it may be less well-known that many of the items are also donated to different volunteer groups or charities to help with their sustainable mahi.

Trash Palace has also become a location where education can take place – where young people can see sustainability in action and learn about what happens behind the scenes.

For eight years now, the Green Bike Trust’s workshop has sat next to Trash Palace. The volunteers in the workshop check over every bike dropped off at Trash Palace and either tune it up ready for re-sale, or strip it for parts.

Through this partnership, many bikes have been donated to people in need of transportation but without the funds to purchase a bike themselves. Last October the Trust hit the impressive milestone of saving 3000 bikes from landfill.

Other used items that Trash Palace has donated include:

  • books and dictionaries to Arohata Women’s Prison
  • reusable cups to Victoria University’s ‘Single Use Cup Free’ campaign
  • books to Kapiti Hidden Books, who keep bus stops stocked up with reading material
  • e-waste to Earthlink, who in turn run and support programmes for special needs workers and the local community
  • clothing to Wainuiomata High School to help work towards their NCEA credits for clothing tech
  • electrical items to the Ngaio Scout Group for them to dismantle
  • cups for Get Fixed’s community cup library
  • various items to schools throughout the Wellington Region
  • various items to different charities as needed
  • various items to Bush Sprouts Charity which can be used in imaginative play and learning activities
  • broken inflatables to Lilla Bean, which are made into wet bags.

So next time you’re having a clear out, don’t forget to drop by Trash Palace to donate your unwanted items, you never know who they might end up helping!
