Porirua Mayor Mike Tana is urging people from the city to support Friday’s National Remembrance Service at 10am at Waitangi Park in Wellington.

“We have taken advice from Police, that a specific Porirua City event will stretch resources from many parties, so we are encouraging people to attend or tune into the event being planned in Wellington.

"Also tonight we are joining the Porirua Multicultural Council to celebrate Race Relations Day at our regular Thursday night market.

"We will dedicate this time to remember those who lost their lives in Christchurch on Friday 15 March.

"Friday’s event gives us another opportunity to get together and to pay our respects to those lost in the Christchurch tragedy, so I’m urging everyone to really get behind this event and to come together in remembrance."

Last Friday, Porirua school children joined their regional counterparts a week after the tragedy to perform a simultaneous haka, and there is a condolence book which can be signed at Pātaka Art + Museum.

People unable to make it into Wellington City can either tune into TVNZ or watch the livestream on the TVNZ website.
