Porirua shines on Waitangi Day

The crowds came out to Te Rauparaha Park, the Arena and Pātaka last week to celebrate the first in-person Waitangi Day event in Porirua since 2021.

There was something for everyone, as local food trucks sold delicious kai, tamariki participated in activities in the Arena, others danced to some choice tunes coming from musicians on the main stage, and even more people tried their hand on the water as part of the free waka tours.

Live performances ranged from local groups such as Ngā Uri o Whiti Te Rā and Touche, to The Voice finalist Ella Monnery and 2022 APRA Silver Scroll Award-winner Rob Ruha.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says it was heartening to see thousands of people turn out for the event, and the community come together to make it a success.

“It was a fantastic way to mark our national day, and we were honoured to share it with a special delegation from our sister city of Blacktown, Australia.”
