Porirua Sports Awards 2018 nominations open

Porirua Sports Awards

Softball coach Mark Sorenson, who picked up the coach and supreme winner trophies at last year's Porirua Sports Awards.

The time has come to get those nominations in for the Porirua Sports Awards.

The cutoff date this year is October 5, with the period for achievements to be considered by judges from September 1, 2017, through to August 31 this year.

The last two supreme award winners were triathlete Ngarama Milner-Olsen and Black Sox softball coach Mark Sorenson, and the event’s organiser Helen Brookes expects the calibre this year to be just as high.

The categories are Coach, Team, Young Sportswoman, Young Sportsman, Sportswoman, Sportsman, Service to Sport, Athlete with a Disability and Volunteer of the Year.

Porirua City Council is hosting the event, with support from Trust House as the main sponsor. The awards night will be held at Te Rauparaha Arena on November 8.

Ms Brookes says October 5 isn’t far off, so it is important clubs, coaches and parents get their nominations in as soon as they can.

“It’s usually the way that people leave it to the last minute, but the attitude should be to do it quickly.”

Ms Brookes loves the awards and what they highlight.

“Sport is such a huge part of our community and what better way to celebrate this than through these awards?

“It’s always an excellent night, looking back on the last 12 months of what our athletes, teams, coaches and volunteers have achieved regionally, nationally and internationally, as well as acknowledging people for volunteering and serving their sports.

“You look at some of the names on the trophies over the years, like TJ Perenara, Marty McDowell, Lynette Brooky, Jerry Collins and Olivia Baker – real champions that have hailed from Porirua.

“But it’s also important we recognise the unsung heroes in our community and these awards do that.”

Barbershop world champion and host of The Naked Choir, Jeff Hunkin, will MC the event again.

The nomination form for the sports awards can be found at terauparaha-arena.co.nz.
