Porirua has more than 100 kms of walking tracks that traverse the coastline, bush, city, farmland, wetlands, and historic sites.

There are dozens of walks in the greater Porirua area from Pukerua Bay in the north to Kenepuru in the south, from Belmont and Battle Hill Regional Parks in the east and Titahi Bay in the west. Explore the outdoors. We have plenty of great hiking tracks and trails in Porirua for all ages and fitness levels.

Build up your stamina and confidence on Porirua’s walks then dare yourself to enter the Porirua Grand Traverse, a multisport event including running, kayaking, and mountain biking, held once a year in Porirua

Summer trails

Summer is the perfect time to pop your walking shoes on and explore, and Porirua has options for all moods. Whether you feel like a challenging hike, a gentle wander by the water or to escape the sun under leafy green trees, our trails have it all.

Escarpment Track

10km, 3-5 hrs (one way) Stretching from Pukerua Bay to Paekākāriki, ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is on the must-do list for adventurous walkers. With lots of steps and steep terrain, fitness is essential. Breathtaking views are the reward for those up to the challenge


Te Ara Piko

6.8km, 1 hr 40 min (one way) You can now walk the entire northern side of the stunning Pāuatahanui Inlet. Take in gorgeous water views and birdlife from a new, flat track that’s accessible for all.


Bothamley Park

5.3km, 1 hr 30 min (one way) With many tracks to choose from, Bothamley Park has been described as the green heart of Porirua. The wide gravel track passes through mature exotic trees and regenerating natives. A great buggy walk with an easy gradient.


Te Ara Utiwai

6.1km, 1 hr 45 min (one way) Escape the summer heat in the leafy cool cover of native forest, as you follow a gentle gradient to the summit of Rangituhi. You’ll love the greenery, and the views from the lookout are worth every step.
