Responding to natural hazards

There is increasing awareness of the need to better plan for natural hazards, with climate change exaggerating existing natural hazard risks .

Aotearoa New Zealand is a hazard-prone country and our existing natural hazard risks are being made worse because of climate change. There is increasing awareness of the need to better plan for natural hazards.

Porirua is susceptible to a range of natural hazards, including meteorological (eg heavy rainfall resulting in flooding), coastal (eg erosion, coastal inundation) and geological (eg earthquakes). More information on how Porirua City responds to these hazards can be found here:

    • liquefaction

The District Plan responds to flooding, coastal hazards and active faults within Porirua. It includes maps and rules to manage subdivision, land use and development to address the risk of these natural hazards. Further work is required in the future to respond to other geological hazards through the District Plan.
