Ardijah locked in for Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day

Last year’s Waitangi Day attracted thousands to the waterfront of Te Awarua-o-Porirua.

A popular New Zealand band is likely to draw a big crowd in Porirua on 6 February.

Ardijah will headline Waitangi Day celebrations in Porirua in 2019, beside the waters of Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour.

The festivities will take place along Wi Neera Drive, in front of Whitireia Polytechnic, for the second year running, and planning is well-advanced.

Partnering with the polytech and mana whenua Ngāti Toa Rangatira was key, says organiser Helen Brookes.

“This is a day to celebrate what is fantastic about our place and our city, our people and our diversity, and we can’t wait to host visitors from across the region.

“We’re stoked to get Ardijah performing – they’re a Kiwi favourite and will add a magic summer vibe to the event.”

The theme of Waitangi Day, developed after discussion with Ngāti Toa, will be Whiti Te Rā, which means “Into the sunlight”.

“There’s going to be lots to do on that day to keep the family occupied, a main entertainment stage and lots of tasty and healthy food options. We’ll also have a variety of cultural activities for people to get involved in,” Ms Brookes said.

One popular activity returning again will be the chance to get out on the harbour in waka.

Porirua Mayor Mike Tana says the day serves two purposes for him – getting out and having fun in the sun, and celebrating New Zealand’s history and cultural heritage.

“I love Waitangi Day in Porirua. The sounds, the food, the people, the fun, and it’s a day for recognition and learning too,” he said.

“Having it back on the harbour front is appropriate, as this is fast-becoming such an important area for our city. See you down there!”

The celebration of Waitangi Day will open with an official welcome at 11am, and finishes at 4pm.
