COVID-19 - Rubbish and recycling information

news - covid rubbish recycling

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Spicer Landfill will be closed to residents dropping off rubbish and green waste from 5pm on Tuesday 24 March.  This also includes tyres, oil and LPG bottles.

The closure is to prevent unnecessary risk of Covid-19 exposure to both customers and landfill staff.

The bulk recycling facility opposite Trash Palace will remain open.

Trash Palace will be closed.

The landfill tip-face will still be open to commercial account holders.

Council rubbish bags will continue to be available at supermarkets after the Council offices close at 5pm Wednesday 25 March.

All kerbside rubbish and recycling collection will continue.

However due to the closure of the recycling processing plant in Seaview, all mixed recycling will for the time being be going to landfill, says David Down, Porirua City Council Manager Water and Waste.

“Unfortunately there is no room for stockpiling so much material, although glass will continue to be kept for recycling.

“Until our full service resumes, there are things we can all do to try to reduce the amount of rubbish we make.”

  • Avoid the temptation to catch up on tree and hedge trimming, pruning and so on
  • Please keep old furniture, fridges, LPG bottles and so on at home for now until we can fully re-open again.

And a few recycling tips as well:

  • Cardboard can be used in wood burner as fuel, with winter around the corner
  • Use plastic juice bottles to store water if you don’t have water storage tanks. This will increase your recycling bin capacity
  • Avoid food waste which we know forms a big part of many rubbish bags.  By reducing the amount of food thrown out you may also reduce the number of trips needed to the supermarket  (e.g. try to use all your food, use your freezer, leftovers are your friend, check out the  Love Food Hate Waste website for recipes and tips)
  • Re-use packaging such as plastic food containers (e.g. yoghurt, ice-cream, margarine) and plastic bags – use them for storage or art projects for the kids while they are at home
  • If your bin isn't full, you may prefer not to put it out until full service resumes.

Thank you all for your understanding as we all unite against COVID-19.
