Pickleball comes to Porirua

Pickleball

Porirua City Council has added Pickleball to its long list of sports facilities on offer, and just in time for Parks Week.

The Council recently installed nets and marked out two outdoor courts at the Mungavin Courts in Rānui for the sport that is rapidly growing in popularity.

Pickleball originated in the United States in the 1960s. It is a racket sport that can be played indoors or outdoors and as a singles or doubles sport. It is similar to the old padder or paddle tennis, with a court smaller than a tennis court and a lower net allowing it to be accessible to a wider range of ages.

There is a pickleball league in Wellington, and with the sport growing in popularity around the region, it’s time to give Porirua locals the chance to get to know and love the sport too.

The nets can be rolled in and out of place to allow the court to be used for other sports. Anyone who would like access can fill out a booking form here.
