An online training resource that gives the user access to more than 5000 courses in everything from computer programming to becoming a graphic designer is now available through Porirua Library.
The website, Lynda.com, run by the social media for professionals website LinkedIn, offers access to a host of online training courses and video tutorials to upskill people and businesses.
Porirua City Council Manager City Libraries, Brian Anderson, said the decision to offer library users access to Lynda dovetails perfectly with its aim to embrace new technology and support the community.
“The role of library’s are continuing to evolve, from simply a place where people come to read and borrow books to a gateway to learning, using the wealth of advanced tools and options now available.
“Lynda gives people the opportunity to take a whole new career path, or take just a few minutes a day learning a new skill.”
Anderson said the courses are a great example of “micro-learning”, with each course being broken down into bite-size, 10 minute tutorial videos, perfect for learning in your lunch break or on your daily commute.
The website is also regularly updated, with around 25 new courses being added to the site every week.
“Offering this service is a great way for us to enhance the library users experience”, Anderson said.
“We are committed to providing our users with access to technological innovations, to make sure we remain up-to-date with developments in the ever-changing digital world.”
Anderson said anyone with a Porirua Library account could access the service using the direct link, https://www.lynda.com/portal/sip?org=poriruacity.govt.nz,
or via the Library website https://porirualibrary.org.nz/, and selecting the “Research Resources” link.
He said all you have to do to set yourself up on Lynda is to enter your Library Card number and PIN, create your new account using your name and email address, and you are good to go.
