Street lights

Find out what to do if the streetlights are out in your area and who fixes them.

One street light

If it’s one street light then it’s likely to be a problem with the bulb, fitting or the pole. Porirua City Council is responsible for these issues.

You can report the issue either by using Antenno, completing the online form below, or let our Contact Centre know on 04 237 5089. It’s helpful if you can give us specific details about the location of the light.

More than one street light

If it’s more than one light in a row or a wide area that’s not working, then it’s likely to be a circuit fault. Wellington Electricity is responsible for these issues.

You can report the issue either by using Antenno, completing the online form below, or let our Contact Centre know on 04 237 5089 and they will log the job and pass it on.

Electricity outages or issues

If there’s a safety issue with electricity, you should call Wellington Electricity’s 24 hour emergency line on 0800 248 148.

If your power is out and there are no safety issues, contact your individual electricity retailer. Your electricity retailer is who you should talk to about:

  • a new electricity connection.
  • temporarily disconnecting your power.
  • your electricity bill and prices.

LED lighting

LED street lights have been installed across the city. These provide a softer white light that can be directed where it is needed and are more energy efficient when compared to the older street lights. Switching to LED lights has provided the following benefits:

  • better light that gives clearer colours and detail, leading to safer streets.
  • produceless light pollution as the light can be directed,
  • are cleaner for our environment as they are recyclable and contain no toxic material.
  • are energy saving, they use a third of the energy compared to existing lights.
  • are longer life, they last four to six times longer.
  • reduce the city's power and maintenance bills.
  • are quick to light up.
