Consultation on the Porirua Adventure Park, proposed for Porirua City at Spicer Botanical Park/Te Rāhui o Rangituhi closed on 7 June 2019. We received a variety of feedback from across the city and region and overall there was strong public support for the concept.
On Wednesday 3 July the Council heard from groups and individuals in support of their submissions, and following these hearings, the Council considered all the feedback received as part of their deliberations.
During the deliberations, and in response to the submissions received on the proposal to lease, the Council agreed that in the event of granting the lease they would:
On Wednesday 24 July the Council considered the proposal to lease and agreed to a grant of lease, plus associated licences and easements from the Council to Porirua Adventure Park Limited (PAPL), for the purposes of establishing the proposed Porirua Adventure Park:
The Council is now in a position to proceed to enter into a lease and associated licences and easements, to enable the development of the proposed Porirua Adventure Park. PAPL now need to meet the conditions in the Agreement to Lease which includes raising capital from investors.

The new park will include a series of walking and biking pathways and routes freely open to all. A gondola ride, zipline, wave simulator and cafés will be on offer for those who want to pay for the experience.
Porirua Adventure Park will improve the ability for people to enjoy the reserves and will give access to those who couldn’t previously get there, for example the elderly, small children and people with disabilities or accessibility issues.

The independent MartinJenkins Economic Impact Assessment states that during construction the financial benefit for Porirua will be $8.3 million, and for the Wellington urban area, $13.7 million, while the project will also create 100 and 152 jobs respectively.
The economic benefits during operations are also impressive with the project expected to add $9.6 million annually to the Porirua City economy.
Jobs created at that time have been assessed at 147 for Porirua City alone.
It’s estimated there will be an additional 80,000 plus visitors per year.

Plans show that the proposed areas of development are expected to impact access to a small portion of Spicer Botanical Park.
Porirua Adventure Park will be freely accessible to everyone with the option to pay to use the new facilities.
The development of the park will mean more people visiting and using the area, there will be the construction of buildings that blend into the site, the removal of some plants and some alterations to the landscape during construction and the term of the lease.

Before construction on the park can begin, Porirua Adventure Park Ltd Partnership need to acquire various permissions to use the land for this purpose.
The resource consent has been approved.
The Department of Conservation concession, and consents and discharge permits from Greater Wellington Regional Council, are currently in progress and decisions are expected by mid-year.
Porirua Adventure Park Ltd Partnership also need to obtain a lease from Porirua City Council to operate the park from Spicer Botanical Park. This is what we have been consulting with you about.
