Pātaka Art + Museum

Porirua is an artistic and cultural powerhouse and Pātaka Art + Museum is the treasury of Porirua’s art and history.

Situated right in the city centre, on Parumoana Street, Pātaka Art + Museum is a place of inspiration. We encourage you to stop by and enjoy the latest exhibition of contemporary art, take part in an art class, and explore our local history. You can even hire out rooms for meetings and events.

Toi Store located at Pātaka has beautifully crafted pieces of art, jewellery and souvenirs you can purchase for yourself or as a gift.  The store is open seven days a week.

#DiscoverPorirua - art, events, great coffee and kai, beaches, walks and bike rides. Let us take you on a tour of our city.  Mā te wā.

Cafe Kaizen

Be sure to stop in at the cafe within the Pātaka complex and enjoy a flat white and nibble overlooking the Japanese garden. Developed in honour of Porirua City’s sister-city relationship with Nishio City of Japan. If you’re lucky enough to time your trip on the third Sunday of the month you’ll be able to catch the Market @ Pātaka and grab a local artistic memento of your trip.

Japanese Garden

Pātaka Art + Museum’s Japanese garden was created in the karesansui style, which represents mountains and water through the use of rocks and gravel. The white rounded gravel is a visual metaphor of the sea while the combination of the small darker stones and larger boulders are symbolic of the mountains, waterfalls and streams

If you look carefully it is possible to see the karetaki, the path of a dried-up waterfall as it falls into the karenagare or dry stream bed.
