Porirua City has 10 Councillors in three wards (Onepoto General Ward, Pāuatahanui General, and Parirua Māori Ward) who, together with the Mayor, represent our community for three years. Say hello if you see them at the supermarket or sports ground.
The Mayor appoints the Deputy Mayor at the first Council meeting after the local body election. The Deputy Mayor has the same roles as other Councillors, but fulfils the Mayor’s responsibilities if they’re absent or incapacitated, or if the office of Mayor is vacant.
The Council can vote to remove the Deputy Mayor from their role as Deputy Mayor.
The Mayor has appointed Councillor Kylie Wihapi as Deputy Mayor for this triennium.
Five Onepoto General Ward Councillors represent Mana Island, Tītahi Bay, Takapūwāhia, Elsdon, Kenepuru, Porirua City Centre, Ranui, Cannons Creek, Aotea, Waitangirua, Ascot Park.

The Local Electoral Act 2001 requires Council to review its representation at least once every six years. Council reviewed its representation arrangements in 2012 and again in 2018. The latest review took place in 2021 (due to the Council deciding to establish a Māori ward for Porirua City).
